Reminders & Summary from this week (week of Nov.15)

Hi families,

Reminders:

1) Parent-Teacher conferences are on Nov.20, 21, 22. Please log into your "my CBE" account to book your time. Booking starts on Nov.16.

2) Next week is a short week!
Thursday (Nov.21) is half-day, dismissal time is at 12:05.
Friday (Nov.22), there is NO SCHOOL for students.

3) Please check the audio files in our weekly Homework & Dictation page, if the audio files are not working for you, please let me know. (It usually works better with Google Chrome browser) 

Summary of the week:

3) MATH
-Grade 1s are working on simple subtraction questions, students should be able to use number-line/draw pictures to solve subtraction questions.

-Grade 2s are working on double-digit addition questions with REGROUPING, everyone in the class understood the strategies, and they did amazing on the daily math practice worksheets.

4) Mandarin
-Grade 1s, from our dictation results, many grade 1s still need to practice on "我, 你,家" and our new words for this week will be "冬天(winter)秋天(fall)”

-Grade 2s are learning about Mandarin words for four seasons春天 (Spring), 夏天(Summer), 秋天(Fall) and 冬天(Winter) and 季节 (Seasons). 

5) Science

Grade 1s finished their listening experiment, and we started our new science unit –Seasonal change. We talked about seasons in different countries, and what caused seasonal change.

Grade 2s finished their thermometer experiment, we talked about extreme hot and extreme cold temperature.

6) Gym
In gym this week, we practiced on our Starting in November, we practiced many basketball drills. We worked on ball handling (on spot), tap the ball(finger tap from side to side, tap above the head), throw up the ball and catch it, dribbling (various exercises), both hands cross over dribbling.

Nov.12- 15 Learning updates

Hi families,

Our winter concert is coming up soon (Nov. 28), and this year, we will be working with Trickster theatre artists to create an amazing winter concert! Our theme this year will be Winter perspective.

With the winter concert coming up, we will start learning more about seasons, temperatures, weather, and Arctic animals in the coming weeks.

This week (Nov.12-15)

Mandarin中文:
Starting this week, we will be talking about seasons, temperature and weather. We are 
going to continue working on practice using and writing our mandarin name.

Math:
Grade 1: This week, grade 1s will start learning about subtraction, and we will start looking at one less/one more and two less/two more of a number. At the end of the week, students will be able to solve simple one digit subtraction questions (with the help of number-line/unifix blocks) and they will be able to use Mandarin mathematical vocabularies (duō) (more) (shǎo) (less) to communicate their ideas/thought process.

Grade 2: Grade 2s will continue working on two-digit addition, but this week, we will dive deeper and looking at solve addition questions with/without regrouping. If we have time, we will start looking at how to solve two-digit subtraction without regrouping.

Science:

Grade 1s will be finishing the smells and sounds experiments. We will start our new unit in science this week on seasonal change. We will talk about why there are four seasons and what causes seasonal changes, and "do all countries around the world have 4 seasons?".

Grade 2s will finish recording temperatures from different areas of our school.  And we will continue working on the cold/hot temperature unit, students will get a chance to discuss about methods for heating and cooling, and we will be looking at animals living in the Arctic regions.
