Learning Updates for March. 2-6

March三月 is here! Spring 春天 is coming 🍃. This month, we have lots of exciting things happening, please keep on reading and find out more!

Reminders提醒:

Family photo: (Submit to Ms.Fan by Thursday Feb 5). Both classes are starting a Mandarin writing project, we need family picture from you all! If you don’t have a printed picture, please email it to me fahildisheim@cbe.ab.ca.

March is gymnastics month, we will be working on gymnastics skills in gym.

Plant project: Our tomatoes are growing!! Yay!! We have planted tomatoes 🍅 in our classroomJ our plants will likely to harvest in 60-70 days. Be prepared for some tasty tomatoes coming home!!

Mandarin中文:
Grade 1: This week, we will be learning the next 4 consonants r, z, c, s in pinyin, we will learn about the new vocabularies of the month.

In March, we are starting to learn about nationalities and temperature, we will learn many country names, different language names, how to ask nationalities related questions, and also talk about daily temperatures.

Grade. 2: This week, we will be learning the next 3 compound vowels an, en, in in pinyin, we will also learn about the new vocabularies of the month.

Math数学:
Grade 1: This week, we will build 3D shapes using toothpicks or popsicle sticks and clay, and learn more about cube, cylinder, cone, pyramid, sphere. We will talk about three common attributes of 3D shapes (face, edge, corners).

Starting this week, every Wednesday and Thursday, we will start the day with a 15-20 mins Mental math warm up time. We will review skip-counting, number-talk, days of the week, reading calendar, months of the year. I will also start teaching students about different mental math strategies. This week, Grade 1s are going to review simple subtraction with regrouping.
  

Grade 2: Grade 2s will be building 3D shapes. They will also start on a new math chapter “statistics and probability”, we will learn how to formulate questions that can be answered by gathering information about self and others this week.

Starting this week, every Wednesday and Thursday, we will start the day with a 15-20 mins Mental math warm up time. We will review skip-counting, number-talk, days of the week, reading calendar, months of the year. I will also start teaching students about different mental math strategies.

Grade 2s will be reviewing subtraction without regrouping/borrowing and we will also learn about subtraction with regrouping/borrowing this week.

Science科学:

Grade 1s will continue working on the building a strong house using the materials provided. If majority of the class are done with their building, we will test their house (if it will be easily blow down by the “big bad wolf” hair dryer), otherwise, we will test their house on the following Tuesday.

Grade 2s will be starting the new science unit “exploring liquids”. This week, we will work on an experiment, we will use different types/sizes of containers, and students will make predictions and observations on which container hold the most water, and why.
