Pictures from week of Jan.7-10

Hi Grade 1 & 2 friends and families,

We had such a productive first week back! In the next few weeks, we will continue learning about Chinese New Year! 

This week, both green and yellow groups have impressed Mrs. Yaunish and I with your hard work. I am so proud of you all 💖 Both groups did amazing in our CNY performance practices, THANK YOU for practicing those songs at home! 

We did math bingo games, we learned about how to use Chinese paint brush (毛笔) and did calligraphy (书法), we also learned how to do Chinese style paper cutting and made traditional Chinese New Year banners and red envelopes.

Jan 7-10 Learning Updates


Hi Grade 1 & 2 friends and families,


Happy New Year xīn nián kuài !  Welcome back! I can not wait to see you all back on Tuesday, Jan. 7th,2020. 💕

Reminders提醒:


Jan 7th is our first day back, school will start at 8:00am.

Open House (Jan 9th): Our Annual Open house is taking place this coming Thursday, Jan 9th from 6:30-7:30 pm. If you have friends or know families who are interested in our Mandarin Bilingual Program, please come to our open house night, we will be there to answer any questions about the Bilingual program.

Volunteer Needed: For the Chinese New Year performance, Ms.Fan needs some volunteers to help with our props preparations, if you have some time you’d be willing to share, please contact Ms.Fan ASAP J Thank you so much!

Cardboards needed: If you have some cardboards you wanted to be recycled, please bring them to us! We need lots of cardboards for making the Chinese New Year Performance Props.

Clean Recycled materials needed: Our Grade 2 friends are going to learn everything about boat and buoyancy in January, we will be building boats using recyclable items. If you have any of the following recycled materials, please bring them to us J Thank you so much!

Recycled materials: small plastic food containers, lids, trays, bottle caps, foam cups, craft sticks or coffee stirrers, egg carton, milk/juice paper containers.

Fun-Lunch is taking place on Thursday, Jan 16th.

Chinese New Year Celebration is on Jan 23 @ 6:30 pm.

Mandarin Home Reading: We will start our Mandarin Home reading program the week of Jan. 13th. More information will be sent home.

This week (Jan.7-10)


Mandarin中文:

Daily 5: Starting in January, I am going to introducing Mandarin Daily Fives to our Grade1 & 2 friends. Students will learn Mandarin in 5 different stations each day, and I will work closely with each student and individualize their learning based on their Mandarin levels.

Students will have 5 stations (15-20 mins per station) to rotate during Mandarin learning period, students will work on printing/word work, guided reading station, writing station, Mandarin fun learning games station, and listening/speaking station.

This week, we are going to work on reviewing what we have learned before the break, and we will start talking about Chinese New Year traditions and 12 zodiac animals, and the legend of Nian.

Grade 1s will be introducing to Pinyin this month by learning about the 4 main tones and 6 vowels of pinyin. (If you do not know what Pinyin is, please check this post  http://blog.tutorming.com/mandarin-chinese-learning-tips/what-is-pinyin)

Students will also be reviewing how to write the date, name, week, and numbers in Mandarin, they will also be working on writing a few small sentences with the sentence starter “()()(huan)(I like..)” during writing station.


Grade 2s will be reviewing knowledge of Pinyin from last year, we will be reviewing the pronunciations of pinyin consonants and vowels, students will make pinyin syllables.

Students will also be reviewing how to write seasons, cold, hot, color words, and like/do not like, size words in Mandarin. They will also be working on writing small paragraphs using the sentences starters to talk about the weather, the season, and comparisons between things.

Math数学:

Grade 1: This week, grade 1s will review what we have learned before the break, students will be reviewing “smaller than/less than, greater than/bigger than, equal, number representation using base ten blocks, and addition/subtraction skills.”

Grade 2: This week, grade 2s will review what we have learned before the break, students will be reviewing “skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, smaller than/less than, greater than/bigger than, equal, double-digit number representation using base ten blocks, and double-digit addition/subtraction skills.”


Science科学:


Grade 1s will be continue working on seasonal change, we will look at cycles and sequence in our daily life, we will make posters about the season cycle, day & night cycle.


Grade 2s will be learning about different types of boat, and important factors about boat and buoyancy, if we have time this week, we will start brainstorming ideas about building our boat.
