Learning Updates for Jan.13-17

Hi Grade, 1 & 2 friends and families,

This week is super cold, please dress for the weather!

Reminders提醒:

Clean Recycled materials needed: Our Grade 2 friends are going to learn everything about boat and buoyancy in January, we will be building boats using recyclable items. If you have any of the following recycled materials, please bring them to us J Thank you so much!

Recycled materials: small plastic food containers, lids, trays, bottle caps, foam cups, craft sticks or coffee stirrers, egg carton, milk/juice paper containers. (no more cardboards needed!)

Fun-Lunch is taking place on Thursday, Jan 16^th.

Chinese New Year Celebration is on Jan 23 @ 6:30 pm.

Mandarin Home Reading: Mandarin Home reading book bag is coming home after CNY celebration. More information will be sent home soon.

This week (Jan.13-17)

Mandarin中文:

This week, we will start learning about food, and talking about food words related to Chinese New Year.

Grade 1s will be introducing to Pinyin this month by learning about the 4 main tones and 6 vowels of pinyin. (If you do not know what Pinyin is, please check this post http://blog.tutorming.com/mandarin-chinese-learning-tips/what-is-pinyin)

Students will also be learning about different kinds of food in Mandarin, and working on developing their writing skills with sentence starter “我(wǒ)喜(xǐ)欢(huan)吃(chī)/ 我(wǒ)喜(xǐ)欢(huan)喝(hē) (I like to eat/I like to drink..)”.

Grade 2s will be reviewing knowledge of Pinyin from last year, we will be reviewing the pronunciations of pinyin consonants and vowels, students will make pinyin syllables.

Students will be reviewing and learning food words this week, we will focus on learning all vocabularies about fruits, description words to describe food, and also some traditional Chinese New Year related food vocabularies. We will start writing longer, descriptive sentences.

Math数学:

Grade 1: This week, grade 1s will continue reviewing what we have learned before the break, students will be reviewing “smaller than/less than, greater than/bigger than, equal, number representation using base ten blocks, and addition/subtraction skills.” We will start our new topic/chapter for Math after the CNY performance.

Grade 2: This week, grade 2s will continue reviewing what we have learned before the break, students will be reviewing “skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, smaller than/less than, greater than/bigger than, equal, double-digit number representation using base ten blocks, and double-digit addition/subtraction skills.” We will start our new topic/chapter for Math after the CNY performance.

Science科学:

Grade 1s will be continue working on seasonal change, we will be looking at everything about the Sun, we will talk about sun safety, and how can the sun be harmful to human, to the nature.

Grade 2s will be learning about different types of boat, and brainstorming ideas about building our boat.
